The winner of three awards at 1999's Cannes film festival, HUMANITE tracks a detective's investigation into a young girl's rape and murder in a working-class French town -- and it's just one of three movies from La Republique Francaise released Stateside this month. Also debuting: Frederic Fonteyne's AN AFFAIR OF LOVE (formerly A Pornographic Affair), about a man and woman's anonymous sexual relationship; and CRIMINAL LOVERS, in which a mischievous suburban girl manipulates her boyfriend into killing a classmate, from writer-director Francois Ozon. And from this side of the Atlantic: Add 48 hours to Sandra Bullock's latest movie and you've got 30 DAYS, about the relationship problems plaguing a New York City liquor-store clerk. The mythical love story of ORFEU and Euridice is set against the excesses of Rio de Janeiro's modern Carnival. The emotional drama GETTING TO KNOW YOU stars Bebe Neuwirth (Cheers) and Heather Matarazzo (Welcome to the Dollhouse) and is based on three stories by Joyce Carol Oates. Erstwhile friends Michael Imperioli and John Ventimiglia (both of Sopranos fame) are ON THE RUN when one escapes from prison. In PRAISE, a chain-smoking asthmatic and a promiscuous woman with bad skin have a torrid affair centered on sex and Scrabble. When a Manhattan bartender risks it all to purchase THE TAVERN, he frays his ties with friends and family. BORICUA's BOND, about a struggling painter in the South Bronx, features cameos by model Tyson Beckford and the late musician Big Pun. The mystery-comedy WENT TO CONEY ISLAND ON A MISSION FROM GOD...BE BACK BY FIVE stars Jon Cryer, Ione Skye, and Frank Whaley. Using a documentary approach, The ST. FRANCISVILLE EXPERIMENT tracks a group of ghost hunters in a Louisiana haunted house; we're sure any similarities to the title, plot, genre, and shooting style of The Blair Witch Project are purely coincidental.
