STARRING TOM GREEN, BRECKIN MEYER, AMY SMART, SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT, ANDY DICK DIRECTED BY TODD PHILLIPS
BUZZ-O-METER 7
WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL? Could be this year's There's Something About Mary.
''You know Tom eats a mouse?'' offers Meyer, in the spirit of full disclosure. ''I'm surprised the animal-rights people didn't shut us down.'' They didn't, nor did DreamWorks, nor did anyone else, much to the relief of writer-director Phillips, whose Sundance-lauded documentary Frat House was canned by HBO after concerns surfaced about its verity. That controversy doesn't seem to have soured him on the hard-partying college scene, which serves as the launchpad for this road fabliau about Josh (Meyer), a student who accidentally sends his long-distance girlfriend videotaped proof of his drunken infidelity, then has three days to intercept the tape somewhere between Ithaca, N.Y., and Austin, Tex. MTV guerrilla comic Green plays Josh's roomie, who entices their pet boa constrictor to eat -- by example. ''I probably spent an afternoon putting that mouse in my mouth,'' says Green, who is currently turning his bout with testicular cancer into a TV special. ''After a while, it was clear the mouse sort of liked it in there. I think it might have taken a poo-poo at one point.'' There's your verity, HBO. (May 19)
