Playing Hoops

Giant hoop earrings are shrugging off their casual '70s status. At the Oscars last month, they adorned the earlobes of Cate Blanchett and Uma Thurman. The pair worn by Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich are downscale, while Sharon Stone sported a diamond set at an L.A. gala event. ''Stars are taking everyday jewelry and interpreting [it] into evening,'' says jeweler Cynthia Bach, who crafted Blanchett's 24-carat solid gold Oscar earrings. And unlike yesteryear, when larger loops were considered tacky, they now represent understated glamour. Says Bach, ''Women look very elegant in big earrings, the bigger the better.'' Convinced that size doesn't matter, mass-market jewelers like Steve Madden Jewelry are offering hoops in every diameter. Says stylist Jessica Paster, ''Silver and gold hoops are a must for a girl's jewelry box for next season.''
