Woody Allen, Meet the Beatles

The legendary director is surprisingly out of touch with a few other pop culture legends

Sure, jazz-loving auteur Woody Allen blows a mean clarinet; he even directed a musical (1996's Everyone Says I Love You). But Tracey Ullman, costar of his new film, Small Time Crooks, says he's surprisingly out of touch with some pop-culture landmarks: ''He says he hasn't listened to the Beatles,'' she marvels. ''You go, 'Come on, Woody, you're just denying yourself.''' Ullman says she also urged the Woodman to check out Elvis Costello and even the bump-and-grind epic Showgirls: ''I said, 'You gotta watch Showgirls—the script is superb.''' But on second thought, maybe he should just let it be.
