Everybody wants something in Robert Crais' Demolition Angel: The bad guy, a dangerous bomber known as Mr. Red, wants to be on the FBI's Most Wanted List. Det. Carol Starkey wants to prove she isn't, as her peers think, a washed-up alcoholic. And the fed who has been chasing Mr. Red for years wants his man. When a bomb bearing Mr. Red's signature goes off and kills a cop, all three converge in a tantalizing game of cat and mouse that promises to deliver a bang but never quite does. While Crais builds tension methodically, like a Boy Scout building a fire, when the time comes for ignition it all goes up too neatly, without any real conflagration. B-
