There's not an Art Deco hotel, fish-belly-pale tourist, or white-sand beach to be found in this collection of photos shot on Florida's unglam Mangrove Coast over six weeks in 1941. Instead, Walker Evans (the acclaimed photographer of Let Us Now Praise Famous Men) showcases the lesser-known, un-airbrushed beauty of the Sunshine State's western shore in unexpectedly affecting images of metal trailer homes, pensive pelicans, and gaudy circus carts. Accompanied by a wry essay by novelist and Sarasota gossip columnist Robert Plunket, Walker Evans: Florida is more like a soothing iced tea sipped on a Tampa front porch than a heady South Beach cosmopolitan.
