In Big Momma's House, Martin Lawrence plays an FBI agent who goes undercover as a sassy fat Southern grandma. A state-of-the-art makeup bodysuit can, for a comic, be creatively liberating, but Lawrence's performance is every bit as broad and cartoony as his costume. Speaking in a high, faintly strangled voice that's a quaver away from George Jefferson's, he doesn't give Big Momma any special, hidden slyness, and that's because Lawrence doesn't appear to possess any himself. There's no there beneath the makeup. What the movie does have is a fair amount of gratuitous noisy slapstick.
