Kenneth Branagh cuts Shakespeare down to size to suit his larky vision of this 16th-century romantic comedy by turning it into a '30s Hollywood musical with tunes by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin. There's dancing, too, by a mixed-quality cast including Alicia Silverstone and Nathan Lane, in numbers built on the glorious models of Fred Astaire's and Busby Berkeley's. But for every moment of inspired lightness, the labor in the artifice is all too evident. C+
