Keyboardist Mays helps design lush, smart structures for the best-selling Pat Metheny Group. On his latest solo venture, though, he makes a hard left, painting an abstract, improv landscape. Despite some dark avenues, it's accessible, even romantic. The digital keyboard is mostly superfluous: Mays is best when coaxing a personal brand of poetry from the piano, unplugged. B
