''For a person who's supposed to be perky, I don't like superficial music,'' claims the seriously perky Kathie Lee Gifford. Reege's soon-to-be-ex-cohost cut her teeth covering Carole King and James Taylor and now appreciates Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan. But new-school hip-hop? ''When Cody starts rapping, I'm like, What the heck is that? But my parents didn't understand the Beatles, so I guess it's a generational thing.'' So what, besides Born for You, her recent CD of new tunes and Broadway and pop standards, is on her playlist?
JOHN BARRY Somewhere in Time (Soundtrack)
I'm a big fan of
soundtracks, and I think he's an incredible talent. I also love
his score to Out of Africa. Unlike pop albums, where you usually
like three songs and have to sit through nine others, I can
listen to great orchestral albums from start to finish without
getting bored.
DOLLY PARTON The Grass Is Blue
Dolly's one of my favorite
people. I'm not a bluegrass freak, but I appreciate the art form.
It's so steeped in history, and I've always loved acoustic
instrumentation. Combined with Dolly's voice, it's a real winner.
BACKSTREET BOYS and 'N SYNC
I listen to all the teen-pop stuff
because of my children and we've had a lot of those acts on Live
With Regis & Kathie Lee. Sometimes you can tell they're just
one-hit wonders, but other times you really feel like you're
watching history in the making. I love 'N Sync, though I'm old
enough to be their mother. And the Backstreet Boys are the most
polite kids ever any one of them is welcome to marry my daughter.
