PSYCH OUT
It's a great time to be an '80s nostalgist. First, the
Cult return with the Diane Warren-penned ''Painted on My Heart''
(from Gone in 60 Seconds) and a new CD in the offing. Now the
Psychedelic Furs have reformed and will begin a tour July 7 with
the B-52's and the Go-Go's. Frontman Richard Butler says the
decision to reunite was serendipitous: ''I was writing songs for
a solo record with my brother [ex-Furs bassist] Tim, and he
said, 'Why don't you do a Furs record as well?''' When their
agent suggested a Furs tour, ''that clinched it.'' Butler promises
a new Furs album, although they need a label. ''They all seem to
be in such chaos,'' frets Butler. ''Do you have any ideas?''
BAIT AND SWITCH
It's no secret Santana's Supernatural owes its
success partly to his high-profile guests. But when he kicks off
a U.S. tour July 20, will kids be bummed to find hired guns Tony
Lindsay and Andy Vargas singing the hits not Rob Thomas
(''Smooth'') or the Product G&B (''Maria Maria'')? ''People want to
hear the songs sounding somewhat like they do on the radio, and
Carlos definitely delivers,'' says Santana rep Susan Stewart. She
adds that Everlast will join the tour's second leg and will
''most likely'' perform ''Turn Your Lights On.'' Uh, we'll most
likely stick with the CD.
