ENGAGEMENTS
Ex-Murphy Brown star Candice Bergen, 54, and New
York City real-estate tycoon Marshall Rose, 63, plan to tie the
knot. She was previously wed to director Louis Malle (Atlantic
City), who died in 1995. No date's been set.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Pope basher! Priest! Lesbian! Celibate! In the
July/August issue of the mag Curve, Irish provocatrix Sinead O'Connor, 33, revealed ''I've gone out with blokes because I
haven't necessarily been terribly comfortable about being a
lesbian. But I actually am a lesbian.'' Then, in EW sister
publication TIME, O'Connor who goes by the name Mother
Bernadette Mary as an ordained cleric in a renegade Catholic
sect states, ''I have a huge calling toward celibacy, which will
probably ultimately be the way I'll go.'' The pop star has a son,
Jake, 13, and a daughter, Roisin, 4.... Oscar-nominated actress
Elisabeth Shue, 36, collected a Harvard diploma June 8. She left
the Ivy League school 15 years ago to pursue acting one
semester shy of her degree. Returning to campus this spring, she
earned a B.A. in government, cum laude.
CONTROVERSY
''American Skin (41 Shots),'' a new song by
politically charged rocker Bruce Springsteen, 50, has New York
City cops up in arms. The song, an apparent tribute to Amadou
Diallo the unarmed West African immigrant killed by 19 police
bullets in February 1999 includes lyrics like ''It ain't no
secret...my friend that you can be killed just for living in
your American skin.'' Police groups called for a boycott of the
Boss' 10 sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden. New York State
Fraternal Order of Police president Robert Lucente told a music
website, ''He's turned into some type of f---ing dirtbag.... Now
he's a floating fag.'' Lucente later apologized; Springsteen's
publicist had no comment.
AILING
TV legend Andy Griffith, 74, is recovering at home in
Manteo, N.C., after undergoing a quadruple bypass May 9.
Griffith, who appears this fall in Billy Bob Thornton's Daddy and
Them, should fully recover.
SPLITS
Pop-Up Video cocreators Tad Low, 33, and Woody Thompson,
33, burst a bubble June 11. The longtime pals plan to break up,
with Thompson continuing to produce the VH1 show while Low keeps
their website, www.spinthebottle.com. Low believes he was ousted
from the show for his rant against Carson Daly of MTV, VH1's
sister network, at the March TV Guide Awards a claim Thompson
denies.
COURTS
R&B bad boy Bobby Brown, 31, was sentenced June 12 by a
Fort Lauderdale judge to 75 days in jail for violating probation
on his 1996 drunk-driving conviction. Whitney Houston's hubby
pleaded guilty to refusing to take a drug test and failing to
return from a trip to L.A. on time; another charge was
dropped.... Hearing-impaired teacher Peter Liberti Jr., 30, of
Tonawanda, N.Y., filed a lawsuit June 7, alleging that Regis
Philbin's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire violates the Americans
With Disabilities Act by auditioning contestants by phone, thus
discriminating against the deaf. Liberti seeks no monetary
damages. ABC responded in a statement: ''In several instances, we
have made appropriate accommodations for...disabled
contestants...and we'll continue to do so.''
