In the TV-level tale Ride With the Devil, rendered with theatrical sensibilities like poetic dialogue and wide-screen vistas, director Ang Lee boldly illustrates the brutality of the Civil War and its effects on a band of pro-South bushwhackers. Neither the meandering script nor the central characters an immigrant's son (Maguire), a freed slave (Jeffrey Wright), a frisky widow (Jewel), and a man of privilege (Ulrich, looking more Louis XIV France than Lincoln America) seem to know where they're headed.
