Downplaying the synth in favor of strings and horns, the king of bluegrass-bop Bela Fleck and the Flecktones fuse cultures on the ambitious album Outbound, as on the Ireland-meets-Africa ''Shuba Yatra'' (performed on sitar banjo). Wizardry abounds, especially on the Aaron Copland-on-acid cover of the composer's ''Hoedown,'' and on Fleck's ''Hall of Mirrors,'' featuring Shawn Colvin's wordless, yearning vocals. B+
