In an inconsistent but inspired solo career, ex-Mott the Hoople leader Ian Hunter has maintained his band's trademark mix of roguish swagger and tough-minded introspection. This two-disc set Once Bitten Twice Shy omits some key tunes and replaces others with inferior versions, but its sly anthems (''Cleveland Rocks,'' the title track) and forthright ballads (''Boy,'' ''Ships'') affirm the unshakable humanity and integrity of this true rock & roll believer.
