In an attempt to offset his own phobia of slithery reptilian beasts, The Snakebite Survivors' Club's writer Jeremy Seal set off on a global jaunt armed with a pair of very strong leather boots and plenty of snake lore. Tracking the deadly taipan in Australia, the hooded cobra in India, the diamondback rattlesnake in the U.S., and the black mamba in Africa, he met with an eccentric variety of humans who have tangled with serpents and survived. Particularly intriguing is the tale of Darlene, a snake handler in Alabama whose evangelical husband attempted murder most unusual. Particularly funny is Seal's mistaking a coat hanger for a mamba in a late-night haze induced by anti-malarial medicine. A-
