Lacking Akira's storytelling acuity and the ultra-lush animation of Ghost in the Shell, X comes across as just another Japanese animated flick that's childishly symbolic (the dragons of heaven must protect the world from the dragons of earth, or something) and perversely graphic (dig the blood, nudity, and lesbianism) at the same time. C-
