The workaday group Buffalo Tom, formed at UMass in the mid-'80s, has had more than its share of righteous moments. Though the band is still kicking around, Asides From Buffalo Tom: 1988-1999 sounds like a fond farewell. The majestic bummer ''Taillights Fade'' hasn't aged a bit. ''Birdbrain,'' an early J. Mascis-produced track that forever tagged BT as ''Dinosaur Jr. Jr.,'' has, but in a good way. Boyish guilelessness in the big, bad world of rock & roll. B
