''There are difficulties,'' admits Limato, ''but we will overcome them because Robert intends to be a stable, good citizen.'' And he has a reputation for being reliable on the set: ''Even at his worst, he was a functioning drug addict,'' says Mailer. ''And my feeling is that he'll remain straight this time.''
Limato won't say what kind of movie Downey wants to make next. Perhaps a frivolous Farrelly brothers comedy would do his mind some good. On the other hand, Wonder Boys director Curtis Hanson says hard time has probably deepened Downey as a dramatic actor. ''Any gifted artist draws from life experience,'' says Hanson, who hung out with Downey the weekend after his release and visited him in prison. ''Robert's gone through a very profound one, so I'm sure it will have an impact just in terms of what feelings and everything else he can now draw on for his craft.''
