A Hollywoodized version of abject poverty in 1960s Ireland, Browne is Angela's Ashes lite. As a newly widowed mother of six, Huston, who also directed, is likable enough -- especially in scenes with her lusty best friend (Monks) -- but the film suffers from its liteness, with a deus ex machina ending that's a little too happy for a woman whose suffering is always too easily alleviated. B-
