Moving beyond her fabled derriere, Jennifer Lopez may now boast that she can open a movie. Her sadistic, flashy thriller The Cell debuted at No. 1 with a $17.5 million haul. Copying the blueprint of its previous late-summer sleeper hit Blade, The Cell's studio, New Line, spent the early part of the summer on the sidelines, holding out for a traditionally sluggish August slot. Still, the week's biggest success story was Spike Lee's stand-up concert film, The Original Kings of Comedy, starring Bernie Mac, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, and Cedric the Entertainer. The yuk-fest opened on a third as many screens as The Cell and took in $11.1 million, for a whopping $13,051 per-screen average -- the biggest in August history.
