Actor-directors are the warrior-kings of filmmaking. They have served in the trenches, watched when productions have gone right, and learned from what made them go wrong. It really should come as no surprise when a Clint Eastwood, Kevin Costner, or Mel Gibson steps behind the camera and crafts an entertainment that is so cinematically complete that it wins an armful of Oscars. But surprised is what moviegoers were while watching Gibson's Braveheart. After all, here was an actor, who made his name as an antihero for the masses in the Mad Max films and the Lethal Weapon series, directing a historical epic about Scotland's greatest hero, William Wallace, who led the battle for freedom against the English.
