In Zhang Yimou's latest, Not One Less, a shy pubescent girl (Wei) is recruited to teach school in a remote Chinese village. When one of her charges, an unruly boy from an impoverished family (Zhang), drops out to find work in the city, she bucks the authorities and the odds to bring him back. As artlessly affecting as its dogged heroine, this bare-bones saga of defiance finds its strength as an unsentimental tearjerker. B+
