Now that Labor Day is in the rearview mirror, it's safe to say that summer 2000 came in with a bang and went out with a whimper. For the first time since 1991, Hollywood was unable to one-up the previous summer's box office haul (this year's $2.7 billion tally was a whole blockbuster shy of 1999's $2.8 billion). It didn't help that this year's final frame saw two dismal debuts -- the time-traveling Highlander: Endgame racked up $6.2 million, while the raunchy dating farce Whipped took a beating, landing a mere $2.7 million. One shred of hope: Brenda Blethyn's British ganja comedy, Saving Grace, which after four weeks in limited release expanded from 255 theaters to 875, landing at No. 12 with a smokin' $3 million.
