Five years ago, Christopher McQuarrie's twisty kidnap thriller might have been heralded as a crackerjack entry in the Tarantino school. A couple of trash-talking sociopaths (Ryan Phillippe and Benicio Del Toro) improvise a daredevil scheme to abduct the very pregnant Robin (Juliette Lewis). The movie, a lively homage to the mighty QT, Blood Simple, and El Mariachi, is too transparently diagrammed, but McQuarrie, it's clear, is a natural-born filmmaker. B
