In The Quarry, Irish actor Lynch (wasted as the shallow rapscallion in 1998's Sliding Doors) oozes inner torment as a man running from an undisclosed past, who cloaks himself in the identity of a Baptist minister in coastal South Africa. French director Marion Hänsel has steeped her desolate psychological thriller in racial and religious intrigue, artfully lensing a multilayered story of complex characters so subtle its virtues could easily be overlooked.
