The only gay feature film made in Communist East Germany, Coming Out is primarily intriguing as a record of life just before the Wall came down. Cute, confused Philipp (Freihof) tries to suppress his homosexuality by becoming involved with fellow teacher Tanja (Manzel), but predictably enough falls for young Matthias (Dirk Kummer). The acting is solid, but the oft-told story is as frustratingly prolonged as Philipp's coming-out process. C+
