RE-UPPING, SHOPPING, AND SOAPING When authors hit it unexpectedly big, publishing houses often quietly renegotiate their contracts to keep them happy. Case in point: Doubleday just inked a new $5 million, four-book deal with E. Lynn Harris, no doubt spurred by the No. 1 debut of his latest novel, Not a Day Goes By. Harris calls the figure ''a big jump'' that ''puts me among my best-seller peers.'' ... Trident Media may not have permanent phones yet, but the agency just founded by ex-William Morris agent Robert Gottlieb is already shopping its first book: The Kennedy Curse, a history of the family's tragedies by journalist Ed Klein ... Later this fall HarperCollins CEO Jane Friedman will make a cameo appearance on the daytime soap Passions to sign up Hidden Passions: Secrets From the Diaries of Tabitha Lenox, a memoir by a character on the show. The book by an unnamed romance writer is real, and HarperEntertainment will publish it in late January. ''Jane loves the concept of publishing in the real world at the same time as in a fictional one,'' says editorial director Hope Innelli.
