Most soundtracks are compilations of the obvious, meant to excite people who have little taste or patience for the slow burn of an album cut. Almost Famous is the grand exception, avoiding easy choices while meticulously re-creating the feeling of being young, awkward, and in love with music in the early '70s.
Consider it a Cameron Crowe mix tape, the Seeds and Clarence Carter mingling with the Who, Rod Stewart, and — for the first time on a soundtrack album — Led Zeppelin. The sequencing stumbles at times, but serious music fans will be proud to have this on the shelf. A-
