Music Review: 'Bootleg Detroit' (2012)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Lead Performance: Morphine; Genre: Rock

Fronted by Mark Sandman, Boston's Morphine was a pulp netherworld set to music. The trio's singular lineup — two-string bass, drums, sax — was an inspired gimmick that created a rock & roll niche all its own. Sandman, who died on stage last year in Rome, called it ''low rock.'' The 1994 live set Bootleg Detroit features the cream of the band's superb first two albums. Sandman knew how to create a mood; this set keeps it alive. B+
