Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook and Message in a Bottle) has again proved himself the king of the tearjerker with The Rescue, a novel about a beleaguered single mom and a sensitive fireman. (That Sparks is plugging away on a 27-city tour is surely boosting his sales; there are 950,000 copies in print after three pressruns.) And moving from goopy melodrama to gossipy memoir, the new title on the nonfiction chart is Natural Blonde, in which columnist Liz Smith lets her flaxen tresses down.
