Spunky was the operative word at last week's celebrity-heavy Project A.L.S. fund-raiser at New York's Metropolitan Pavilion. Emceed by Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick (whom cohost Katie Couric referred to as Parker's ''spunk'' — which, the Today show star jokingly explained, means ''hunk'' in Australia, but something entirely different on Sex and the City), the benefit raised over $1.5 million for A.L.S. (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) research.
