Ape Sounds (2012)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Nigo; Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Where his avant-pop homeboy Cornelius bows to Brian Wilson, the Japanese fashion magnate-cum-musician Nigo (see Bathing Ape streetwear) sounds more inspired by hip-hop auteurs like Prince Paul. But alongside rappers who sling rhymes over Chinese orchestras(!), Nigo's odd jukebox Ape Sounds features My Bloody Valentine-style guitar drones and cocktail-lounge dub, plus catchy encounters with Beastie Boys associate Money Mark and precocious Aussie alt-rocker Ben Lee. Maybe this moonlighter should quit his day job. B
