If you come across Beowulf and think, ''By Jove, I loved the verse translation, let's give the film a whirl,'' you're going to be disappointed. The anguished warrior is still driven to battle the evil Grendel, but the producers do an even more thorough job of mangling the text than Lambert, who struts through this medieval wasteland like a stranded member of a Mad Max road production.
