Neurotic writers, wary lovers, cheatin' hearts, an ensemble of self-centered city slickers, casual chatter about Ingmar Bergman: The tired comedy Portraits Chinois proves there's truth to the cliché that those zany French just adore Woody Allen. Director Martine Dugowson even casts Bonham Carter who played a gallery owner unhappily married to a sportswriter in Allen's Mighty Aphrodite as a fashion designer unhappily living with a screenwriter. Imitation is the sincerest form of flatulence. C+
