WHAT:
Frothy tea with tapioca (also known as bubble tea), which
is hipper than chai tea lattes.
WHY THE PAR-TEA?
An import from
Taiwan, bubble tea is making its way Stateside via
Chinese-American communities in New York City, Seattle, and San
Francisco.
NOT YOUR NANA'S CUPPA:
Bubble tea, which is served
cold, is a combo of tea (in flavors like taro and peanut),
evaporated milk, sugar, and giant black tapioca balls that look
like coffee beans but taste like Gummi Bears. ''It's like chewing
gum and drinking a milk shake at the same time,'' says one New
York fan.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR LATTES?
Priced at under $4 for
a large drink, ''it's better than Starbucks because you get more
bang for your buck,'' says another New Yorker. ''You get the jolt
of caffeine but it's cheaper.'' Sounds like tea time to us.
