A year before he administered the adrenaline rush of Run Lola Run, Tom Tykwer made Winter Sleepers, a slowly spinning ensemble piece about people brought together, one way or another, by a car wreck in a Bavarian mountain town. Here, as in Lola, the director's showy metaphysics are straight out of Philosophy 102: Time, Fate, and the Overhead Shot. At least there's enough on his mind and enough muscle in his technique to make for a solid psychological thriller. B+
