THE WAY OF THE GUN

Phillippe and Del Toro are grungily charismatic as petty crooks who kidnap a surrogate mother (Juliette Lewis) carrying a mob-connected millionaire's baby, but it's the twisting, turning plot laced with hidden agendas that makes this mock noir so mordantly satisfying. Evoking crime stories from Blood Simple to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, writer-director Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) nevertheless charges the material with a crackling style all his own.
