David Yazbek is a most welcome rarity: a new Broadway musical-comedy songwriter who can write funny. His wonderfully evocative, spirited tunes (''Jeanette's Showbiz Number,'' delivered with panache by Kathleen Freeman) and deft parody of Carly Simon (''Big Ass Rock'') are delights. His ballads aren't as memorable. This cast album captures only some of the charm of the season's first Broadway hit (whose heartfelt book by Terrence McNally is a prime asset), but its freshness augurs well for Yazbek's career.
