ABC kicked off 2001 in high style as the late-night portion of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve drew more viewers (23.2 million) than any prime-time program during the post-Christmas week. (The 10-11 p.m. segment finished 20th.) The Alphabet's momentum continued into the new year as its telecast of Oklahoma's triumph in the Orange Bowl finished second only to NBC's ER (1st). Over on CBS, Bette Midler may have won for favorite female in a new TV series at the People's Choice Awards (19th), but her sitcom continues to struggle: A special Monday airing of Bette (39th) lost more than 5 million viewers from its Everybody Loves Raymond (16th) lead-in. Meanwhile, Adrian Pasdar's Mysterious Ways (46th) returned to NBC with less-than-miraculous results.
