Lead Performance: Various Artists; Genre: Soundtracks/Cast Recordings

Gus Van Sant, a notably music-minded director, draws on some of the year's hippest source material for his Finding Forrester soundtrack. Aided by knowing producer Hal Willner, the score includes choice archival morsels from electric-era Miles Davis, an early-'70s Ornette Coleman, and, from the '90s, Bill Frisell. With or without visuals, this makes for a mighty atmospheric cultural brew.
