Video Review: 'Cecil B. Demented' (2001)

EW's GRADE
C

Details Release Date: Jan 23, 2001; Movie Rated: R; Genres: Comedy, Mystery and Thriller; With: Stephen Dorff and Melanie Griffith; Distributor: Artisan Entertainment

Like whacked-out Mickey Rooneys and Judy Garlands, director John Waters' motley band of ''guerrilla'' filmmakers — led by Dorff's eponymous gonzo auteur -- put on their own show, kidnapping mainstream movie star Honey Whitlock (Griffith) to do it. The film has its moments — the gang trashes a multiplex and shoots up the set of Gump Again, starring Kevin Nealon — but Hollywood dreck is an easy target, and it's never clear what, exactly, these kids want to replace it with. They have their causes: pro-porn, anti-MPAA ratings, but in the end, the art they're fighting for is just plain bad. C
