In this portrait of the great Spanish painter as a dying man, director Carlos Saura eschews the fluidity of his dance dramas (Carmen, Tango) in favor of a labored montage of fantasies and flashbacks that rarely bring the artist to life. Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (The Last Emperor) captures Saura's dubious vision with a Goyaesque palette of darkly vibrant colors but sitting through it still feels like watching paint dry. C+
