There's no place like a Judy Garland biopic for unusual advertising placement. Between scenes of Judy Davis' Judy struggling with her addiction to diet pills in ABC's Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows came a female-friendly ad for Meridia, an appetite suppressant. (The rainbow-bright tag line: ''Me and Meridia taking control!'') Which execs clicked their heads together for that badly timed ad booking? An ABC spokeswoman notes the network received no complaints. Nonetheless, Linda Mayer, spokeswoman for Meridia manufacturer Knoll Pharmaceutical Co., is ruby-faced about the juxtaposition. ''This was a surprise to us,'' Mayer says. ''It's unfortunate, because we do take our medicines very seriously and we would not have selected that spot.'' May they also be spared the broadcast premiere of Requiem for a Dream.
