Sox and the City

Popular designers are pairing cotton socks with high heels

Maybe they were fed up with blisters and ruined pedicures, but fashionistas have taken to pairing girlish cotton socks with their sky-high Manolo Blahniks and Jimmy Choos. And the trend, which kicked off last fall with D&G's socks sewn into glam pumps, seems to be the thing for spring. Marc Jacobs, Prada, and Miu Miu are showing socks with sexy heels, while Elle, Harper's Bazaar, and Marie Claire feature the look in their March issues. ''Fashion is always going in cycles,'' explains stylist Toshio Takeda, who notes that socks were big in the 1920s and are popular again with Japanese high schoolers. ''They're really cute and feminine, so this is a good way to make fun of the whole glamour thing.'' Finally, fashion even podiatrists will love.
