Eye Get It

Kitschy sleep masks are in

First it was scented candles. Then cutesy pj's. Next up in bedtime booty? The sleep mask, which is riding a new wave of popularity with celebs and insomniacs alike. But forget basic black -- the latest designs include everything from Asian-inspired florals to cat's eyes. The Los Angeles-based Haute Stuff even boasts masks studded with words like princess and dream (at Nordstrom and Henri Bendel). Stuff's Stephanie Layne says the masks have ''kitsch value.'' But she adds, ''They really are functional, comfortable, and fun.'' Mariah Carey, Dustin Hoffman, and Sting -- who took some to Madonna's Scotland wedding -- have all requested them, and Sarah Jessica Parker wore one on last fall's Sex and the City finale. Meanwhile, Italian silk eye covers from the Marquis de Shade, which retail at New York's ABC Carpet & Home, are popular with Joely Fisher and Liv Tyler. Notes store spokesman Robert Verdi, ''They recall a glamorous, Holly Golightly-waking-up-in-the-morning moment, coupled with a belief that they hold magical healing powers for baggy eyes.'' If it means we'll look like Audrey Hepburn first thing in the a.m., we're in.
