Details Lead Performance: Old 97's

On Satellite Rides, the Weezer of the alt-country set — all nervous energy and brio — take another affable stab at pop stardom. Singer Rhett Miller is always good for a quiver of clever couplets: ''Do you want to meet up at the Pickwood Bowl/We could knock nine down and leave one in the hole,'' he wails on ''Rollerskate Skinny,'' one of an endless supply of girl-crazy rave-ups. With the help of producer Wally Gagel, the band's guitars and voices sound as confident as Miller's come-ons are anxious.
