On 1998's Trio Fascination: Edition One, Lovano hooked up with just bass and drums. The saxophonist keeps it stripped-to-the-bone again on Edition Two, mixing and matching with striking impunity: A typical track might feature the reedman with harmonica and piano or trumpet and bass. An inspiring improviser who can move easily from lyric rhapsodies to free jazz, Lovano pulls off this audacious project with all the musical smarts we've come to expect from this modern jazz figurehead.
