Madadayo

EW's GRADE
B

Details Movie Rated: Unrated; Genre: Foreign Language

Madadayo, Akira Kurosawa's final project, is an intimate affair — a fond fictional portrait of a real-life artist that opens with the writer Hyakken Uchida (Matsumura) announcing his retirement from teaching to his beloved students. Skipping through Uchida's life, the director sketches a tale about friendship, devoting his famed intensity to a swan song that's quietly passionate about life and gently philosophical about death.
