A weekly spin on the Web

TV SQUARED The race between Friends and Survivor 2 revealed an advantage in Microsoft's brand-new digital VCRs. Like rival TiVo, Microsoft's UltimateTV, which stores up to 35 hours of tube time, lets you pause live television. But while TiVo has plenty of features that make it a superior machine, it can record only the channel you're watching. UltimateTV lets you record Jennifer Aniston's antics while watching Survivor contestants maim themselves. TiVo promises to update its units with the same capabilities later this year. Either way, you'll never go back to decaf TV again.

STAR SHREK The software needed to view the 3-D intro to the site for Shrek, DreamWorks' upcoming computer-animated tale, is a hassle to download, but it's worth it (shrek.com). The green ogre who stars is so lifelike that when he picks his nose, you'll expect to see your screen flecked with a booger.
